The home was originally designed by Eco-style Architecture for another client, and when the land was sold with the plans, we began the task of adapting the design to suit the needs and dreams of the new family. A good design is flexible and allows such adaptation.
Traditionally the front of the house addresses the street, but while creating a legible entry from the street, the house turns it’s back to the busy road nestling behind a series of masonry “blade” walls which “anchor” the house and create a variety of private spaces.
A variety of decks and courtyards create a layering of public and private spaces, and connect to various rooms inside allowing indoor/outdoor living in nearly any weather.
A series of building spill down the slope and work with the natural contours of the site minimizing excavation and maximizing access to the expansive views from each pavillion.
This is a home for a busy professional couple with a growing young family. Comfort and relaxed living were a priority, balanced with minimising energy and water consumption. The house relies on solar heating for hot water, is oriented for maximum solar gain on a suburban block and is heavily insulated to retain warmth. Materials are locally sourced. Fixtures, finishes and materials are all selected to be low toxic for indoor air health and an low maintenance, contemporary look.
Eco-style worked closely with the owners to create privacy in a densely developed area of large houses, making a statement without being austentatious- simple, tasteful elegance that reflected the owners personality and aspirations. |
