The use of simple forms, green timber and sheet-iron cladding, plywood kitchen and functional service areas borrow from the imagery of the classic coastal shack. Randal’s Bay shack is about uncomplicated comfort, ease of coming and going from home, to the beach and to the bush. Simple spaces allow a quick sweep and wipe-down of benches and the building can be locked up until the next time.
Two distinct zones are created by the brick blade wall that separates the open active living spaces from the smaller, private sleeping and utility spaces. The zoning is accentuated by the forms and cladding materials.
To the North are the open dining, kitchen and living spaces extended by large decks. One is an active deck extending the dining space with large sliding glass doors and a BBQ. The other is a retreat space to spend a lazy afternoon or evening with a good book.
The house works with the natural contours of the land minimising excavation. The isolated location dictated a number of factors including simple construction to reduce having to transport large structural components and autonomy of services in terms of on-site Envirocycle water collection waste management.
